Über die belgische Mince-Urgesteine AGATHOCLES noch irgendwelche Worte zu verlieren, sollte eigentlich nicht nötig sein. Seit 1988 grindet sich das Trio durch den Untergrund und hat weit über hundert Veröffentlichungen in allen Formen und Farben auf dem Buckel.Der größte Teil davon sind Split-Releases wie aktuell die 10“ mit den Aachenern CAUSE OF DIVORCE. Die neuen AGATHOCLES-Songs sind wie die alten: roh, minimalistisch und gar nicht mal so sehr schnell.
Damit entsprechen sie original der ureigenen Definition von Mincecore. CAUSE OF DIVORCE gibt es nun auch schon mehr als zehn Jahre und aus dem Nebenprojekt dürfte mittlerweile eine „richtige“ Band geworden sein.
Zumindest sind die Aufnahmen der CD-EP „Pax Palinkarium“, die hier erstmals eine Vinylveröffentlichung erfahren, gut gemachter politisch motivierter Grind, der perfekt zu AGATHOCLES passt.
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only WOOAAARGH! “!;,,;!´´
WOOAAARGH are a German Grind label which searches for the better acts that try to depopulate our filthy globe. On March 26th 2016 I uploaded a first review for this label (actually it was Skullhouse that did send me that EP, but it’s a joint adventure with e.g. WOOAAARGH), and some other ugliness will follow for sure. But first things first, and that concerns a split with Cause Of Divorce and Agathocles. The release is available on ‘regular’ black vinyl with a heavy sleeve, and including the lyrics and liner notes.
One side gets raped by Belgian combo Agathocles, which you’ve probably never heard of before… This is their 999thsplit contribution; on March 29th 2016, for your info, I did write and upload a chronicle for their split with De Blenders(Legs Akimbo, the parent label of higher mentioned Skullhouse, by the way). Here the band, once again, teams up with their known blend of punkish Grindcore, grinding Metal-injected Punk, and no-nonsense f*ck-you elegies. I think the introduction, the sample, is quite ‘unique’, haha, and for one reason or another I seem to experience more ‘melody’ this time??? Really??? Really! Yet then again, the no-nonsense, fart-in-the-bottle attitude remains maintained, with sardonic laughs and napalmdeathian or brutaltruthish I-don’t-care-shit-on-you magnificence. No, seriously, once againAgathocles bring their typifying blend of Punk and Grind, lacking of modernistic gimmicks, spitting on trendy escapes, and one cannot but appreciate this pertinacity.
Cause Of Divorce from Germany are presented with their material from last year’s Pax Palinkarium recording. That noise was registered in the city of Aachen in early Spring 2015 (‘spring’; do you hear the little birds singing? I do not either). The band ‘claims’ to be adepts of Belgium’s Agathocles, and for a part there are comparisons, i.e. the punky attitude and the no-nonsense performance. The six (short) pieces on this split-album breathe the essence of Punk-injected Grindcore, added with a groovy execution and, above all, a monstrous production. The balance in between grooving melodies and blasting outbursts reeks of joy, and hey, isn’t that what we need within this scene?
Over the course of Agathocles’ career it has been fairly easy to keep track of their full lengths, as they tend to be spaced out over the course of several years. Splits are a different story, as any given year might find the band releasing twenty or more on different formats. But whenever you do come across one, it’s usually safe to assume that Agathocles is going to deliver more abrasive, old-school grind and whoever they’re sharing a split with is a group worth paying attention to. This is the case with the Cause of Divorce split, which introduced me to these German grinders while offering plenty of killer material to take in.
Agathocles’ side has four songs in total, and unless you’ve somehow just discovered grindcore for the very first time you should have an idea of what to expect from their contribution. This is hardly a bad thing though, as Jan Frederickx has had over thirty years to get his style almost down to a science. The current incarnation of the group has been together since 2012, and they have good chemistry that shows through the material. My Ride Goes On kicks things off with a lengthy sound clip from The NeverEnding Story before mid-tempo abrasive riffing and crunchier drumming takes over. Agathocles strikes a good balance between all-out blasting and tempos that recall grind’s earlier punk influences on this material, and there’s enough substance to give listeners plenty to latch on to. Jan’s vocals are still one of my favorite elements, as his growl has this commanding presence that never fails to make an impression. It’s also worth mentioning that the production values for this split are quite high, with the instrumentals keeping a raw, old-school style while still providing enough clarity to pick out each individual element.After Agathocles’ side ends, it’s time for Cause of Divorce to take over.Their side of the split serves as a vinyl reissue of the ‘Pax Palinkarium’ EP which came out on CD last year. This split served as my introduction to the German band, and they were able to make a strong first impression.Cause of Divorce keeps things shorter than Agathocles, with the majority of the six tracks sticking around the minute and a half mark. These shorter track lengths are used for a mix of faster blasts and slower breaks that wouldn’t sound out of place on a crust punk record (Mental Burdenin particular incorporates quite a bit of these influences). It’s a good mix of old-school influences that is able to provide more variation than one might initially expect, and the regular switch-ups between these slower sections that incorporate some bleaker tonality and the intense blasting helps the material to stand out. The vocals come through as a mix of lower growls and higher shrieks, with regular trade-offs between the two pitches extending the range the band is able to cover.For a group that releases so much material on a regular basis, Agathocles never seems to disappoint. Their contribution to this split has some heavy hitting riffs and intense vocals, and the crunchiness of the recording is quite appealing. Meanwhile, this should also give some much needed exposure to Cause of Divorce, who are able to deliver their own take on old-school grind that adds some darker tonality and atmosphere into the blasting. Check this one out.
In a career that has lasted over thirty years and literally thousands of demos/albums/splits/7 inches etc, it is great to see that cult Belgian grindcore (or mincecore as the band themselves would have it) maniacsAgathocles still sound as raw and vital in 2016 and this split release with brutal German grinders Cause of Divorce is as raw and intense as well as vital as it gets.
Agathocles kick things off with ‘My Ride Goes On’ and after a lengthy sample, the grind madness explodes and doesn’t let up for the duration of the split with both Agathocles and Cause of Divorce blasting through their tracks with aplomb.
Agathocles don’t let up after that furious opening and completely tear through their tracks with typical unhinged glee, with the furiously raw ‘Zie Mijn Gelaat’ and the more punky grind of ‘Emptiness’ being particular highlights and just shows that over the past 30 years, the band have honed their grind assault to perfection.
ANGEHÖRT: AGATHOCLES – CAUSE OF DIVORCE “10 INCH SPLIT”
Nach längerer Zeit haben wir mal wieder eine Kooperation für euch. Eine Split voll mit 18 Minuten Grind- und Crustcore von zwei Bands, die aus unterschiedlichen Generationen stammen. Seite A gehört AGATHOCLES. Die Belgier, die seit 1987 eine urwüchsige Mischung aus Old-School Grind und Straßenpunk (oder kurz Minecore) spielen, haben gefühlt mehr Splits und EP aufgenommen als die gesamte Crust-Szene Englands innerhalb der letzten 30 Jahre. Auf der anderen Seite finden sich die Aachener von CAUSE OF DIVORCE, die treuen Lesern ein Begriff sein dürften. Gemeinsam bringen sie es auf insgesamt zehn Songs, die es wert sind, angehört zu werden.
“My Ride Goes On” ist der Titel der A-Seite und gleichzeitig der erste Track, mit dem AGATHOCLESden Reigen eröffnen. Ganz Grindcore: gibt es hier erst einmal 90 Sekunden Sample-Action (scheinbar ein Zitat aus “Die unendliche Geschichte”), dem nur knappe 45 Sekunden Raserei folgen. ‘The Only Judge’ ist mit drei Minuten im Anschluss der längste Titel dieser Platte (es folgen danach fast ausschließlich Songs, die unter zwei Minuten liegen). Dieser Song unterscheidet sich abgesehen von der Länge nicht vom restlichen Programm. Ein kratzig-kehliges Organ, das von einem stumpfen, verzerrten Rock’n’Roll-Beat und schepperten Drums begleitet wird. Ist das kreativ, originell oder anspruchsvoll? Scheiße nein, natürlich nicht! Aber ich liebe es trotzdem. Das sind Kompositionen wie sie auf der Klassiker -Kompilation “In Crust We Trust” stehen könnten! Eine herrliche Scheibe, auch wenn es einfache Hausmannskost ist, aber dafür besonders schmackhafte.
“Pax Palinkarium” heißt die zweite Seite und gehört zu CAUSE OF DIVORCE. Die Krustengrinder aus dem beschaulichen Westen NRWs spielen eine Old-School Core-Kante, die vor allem Fans von NAPALM DEATH, NASUM und ROTTEN SOUND ansprechen dürfte. Die blastenden Beats sind präzise und schlagen gleichzeitig ein wie ein Hagel aus Mörsergranaten. Sänger Marc growlt und screamt sich wie wahnsinnig durch die sechs Tracks, die abseits von ‘Mental Burden’ nicht länger als 100 Sekunden andauern. Wie auch schon bei anderen Releases der Band stimmt hier das Mischungsverhältnis aus metallischer Brutalität und punkiger Attitüde. In Sachen rotziger Verkommenheit kommt man den alten Hasen von AGATHOCLES sehr nahe, auch wenn die Belgier mehr Gossen-Feeling auf sich vereinigen können. CAUSE OF DIVORCE ist es mal wieder gelungen einen hochkarätigen Curst- und Grind-Bolzen zu veröffentlichen, der in dieser Qualität in Deutschland nur selten zu finden ist. Für mich persönlich gehören sie auf jeden Fall zu europäischen Champions League der extremen Cores.
Alles in allem lohnt sich die Split für jeden Fan der genannten Referenzen. Wer kompromislossen Old-School Grindcore will, sollte hier nicht lange fackeln.
